For a long time now, marketing gurus have been telling people that they have to pay attention to their newsletters; that’s ground that you “own” ( as much as you do anything online). But the other places on the net aren’t yours. They’re out of your control.

I found this out the hard way last weekend.

I’ve spent the last seven months posting x3 a day on TikTok and IG. 1400 posts, give or take with extras and missed time. It has been tough to get followers, but suddenly I was gaining some traction.

And then I went to post and got a pop-up:

Your account has been permanently banned for violating community guidelines.

I appealed. Of course I did. Repeatedly. I asked why, I asked them to at least tell me which post it was…something I could defend. I mean, I posted book stuff. It wasn’t exactly political discourse demanding social upheaval. But no. The ban is upheld, they won’t tell me what I did wrong, and no, there’s no further appeals process. Everything to do with that account is…gone. Like it never existed.

And this, my friends, is why we need something like Queer the Shelves Infinite. We need a platform made by real people, staffed by real people, and run by people who care about the community. What we don’t need is something run by people who care for profit and who answer to political folks who’d rather not see us around anymore.

That’s what we’re building. That’s what the Kickstarter is for. We’re ready to build something that matters. We hope you’ll help us spread the word and join up yourselves. We need to create the change we want to see in the world.
